Discover the Beauty of Red Beach

The Red Beach (Kokkini Ammos) is located at location Moudia, 68km southwest of Heraklion and just 800m south of Matala famous resort. To get here you have to walk a trail that begins north of the settlement of Matala and crosses the hill Kastri north of Matala. There are some signs showing the way, so don;t worry about getting lost. In the beginning of the route you have to climb some rocks and in the final meters you have to descend a steep cliff, but it’s not particularly difficult. After walking 15-25 minutes from Matala and after passing a shepherd’s door (close it back, in order goats notto escape!) you will see the magnificent Red Beach from above. The view from the hill is great and is an ideal place for watching the sunset.

Vibrant Cliffs and Sandy Shores: As its name suggests, Red Beach is characterized by its dramatic red cliffs that tower above the sandy shores below. The contrast between the crimson cliffs and the azure sea creates a mesmerizing spectacle that is sure to leave visitors in awe. The soft sandy beach provides the perfect spot for sunbathing, beachcombing, and soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

Crystal-Clear Waters: The crystal-clear waters of Red Beach beckon visitors to take a refreshing dip and explore the underwater wonders that lie beneath the surface. Visitors can escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of their surroundings, listening to the soothing sound of the waves and feeling the gentle sea breeze against their skin.

Hiking and Exploration: For those feeling adventurous, Red Beach serves as the starting point for scenic coastal hikes along the rugged coastline of southern Crete. Trekkers can follow ancient paths that wind through the cliffs and offer breathtaking views of the sea below, making for an unforgettable journey of exploration and discovery.

Photographer’s Paradise: With its dramatic landscapes and vibrant colors, Red Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering endless opportunities for capturing stunning images of nature’s beauty. Whether you’re a professional photographer or simply snapping photos with your smartphone, Red Beach provides the perfect backdrop for creating lasting memories.

The secluded beach is really beautiful, but is vulnerable to the western winds blowing frequently in the region.
Characteristic of the coast, as implied by its name, is the reddish sand originating from the rocks of the region.
The color of the sea gets a lovely blue-green color, making the landscape really beautiful. The Red Beach is not well organized, but there is a primitive stone-wall coffee shop (which is always open during the season), where you can get some food and drinks. There are also a few umbrellas, which may be already taken if you come late. Thus, it is good to have mats and umbrellas with you, because the only natural shade is offered by a couple of tamarisk trees next to the canteen.
